Amerian bittern calling close up

Buy video

This member of the heron family impersonates reeds when it needs to hide. Its call is a clacking of bill and then expelling of gulped air. The call is to attract a mate (late May) and ward off other males. It may also distract potential predators from an active nest. Listen for the loons calling before and after the bittern calls.
