Battling Aussie birds at a nectar feeder
Although Perth in Western Australia has mild winters food can be scarce for birds, particularly nectar-eating species such as Honeyeaters and Silvereyes. These birds are particularly keen to feed on nectar made by dissolving a small amount of honey in warm water, and will compete vigorously to feed when new honey solution is placed in bird feeders in gardens. There is a clear hierarchy – the large grey honeyeaters called Red Wattlebirds displace all others at feeders. The smaller but aggressive black, white and yellow New Holland Honeyeaters drive off smaller birds and the tiny olive-green Silvereyes dominate the subtlety-plumaged small Brown Honeyeater at the bottom of the heap.
