This is hard work - a Purple Swamphen putting its head under water to get bulrush roots to eat

The spectacular Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) is a large, common waterbird in the rail family. Unlike other rails it is brightly coloured, with an oversized red beak and frontal shield and an iridescent purple and blue neck. This bird belongs to the more brightly coloured race Porphyrio porphyrio bellus that is restricted to south-western Australia. This Swamphen was vigorously digging into a clump of bulrush roots (Typha orientalis) at Lake Monger in the late afternoon, submerging its head as it did so before eating the pieces it liked.
