Two seagulls and a horse stand for Mayor
Two seagulls and a pagan dancing horse have stood for election as Mayor in Penzance, Cornwall. The election to the official office of Mock Mayor of the Quay are an integral, if unruly, part of the seaside town's Golowan festival, the annual midsummer celebration.
The festival lasts two weeks and culminates in Mazey Day when tens of thousands of visitors flock to the town to see the processions of townsfolk & school children carrying huge Carnival images through the town. The Mock Mayor leads the processions wearing their badge of office, a huge metal crab, frequently adorned with a cabbage.
This is all, as they say in this area, normal for Cornwall.
