Two giraffes show the complicated process of drinking water

Buy video

The footage show the fascinating sight of two giraffes enjoying a morning drink of water. Giraffes may drink every two to three days if there is water around but they get most of their needed moisture from the green leaves they eat. When giraffe do drink, the process is a complicated one as bending down potentially subjects their brains to an overload in pressure. A giraffe’s brain sit up to five meters above ground and two meters away from its heart which circulates sixty litres of blood every minute. To counteract the potential flood of blood to the brain, giraffe have a network of small capillaries that dilate and constrict to control the flow of blood to the brain when the giraffe bends down and subsequently the flow of blood back to the heart when it stands up again. This eliminates the chance of a giant head rush. Giraffes also possess valves in the neck to assist this process.
