This is the terrifying moment a mother elephant chases a bus, which is carrying 60 passengers.

The incident occurred in the Bandipur forest region in South India on June 24.

The government-owned bus driver stopped the vehicle after spotting an elephant herd on the road.

As he waited for the herd to pass, a cow elephant broke off from the herd and started running towards the bus.

The driver reversed his vehicle hastily, with the shrieking passengers pleading with him to speed up.

But the elephant caught up with the bus and gave it a warning nudge and then miraculously retreated on her own.

A voice can be overheard in a video saying that the elephant was only trying to protect her calf in the herd.

The bus driver switched off the engine, waited for the herd to move, before driving away.
