Indian Minister organises frog wedding to 'appease rain gods'
An Indian Minister has sparked off controversy by organising a wedding of two frogs to appease rain gods.
Lalita Yadav, minister for woman and child development in the state of Madhya Pradesh, organised the event in the drought-hit region of Chhattarpur on June 22.
Two frogs were brought and held by their limbs in the amphibian wedding that mimicked a human wedding in all ceremonies.
The minister herself took part in the rituals that were presided over by a priest. The wedding ceremony was followed by a grand feast for hundreds of people, who had gathered at the site to witness the ‘marriage’.
Opposition parties slammed the wedding saying the minister was promoting superstition in the region.
The Congress party leader Chhattarpur Alok Chaturvedi said that instead of organising such events, the Minister should have provided drinking water in the region.
But Yadav said people region in the region were reeling under from a drought as the “environment was not happy.”
“The frog wedding is not superstition but a logical tradition to balance the environment,” she said.
