This is a terrifying moment a woman finds a deadly Russell’s Viper slithering inside her mosquito net.

The woman was able to get out safely and raise an alarm.

The incident occurred in a village in Banki, Odisha, India, on June 24.

Ujhi Dei, 60, was sleeping on the veranda of her home as it was hot inside. She had tied a mosquito net to keep the bugs away.

In the middle of the night, she woke up and felt a cold object rubbing against her feet. She ignored the sensation initially but felt it a few more times. She then got out of the net and put on the lights.

She was shocked to see an adult three-feet-long Russell’s Viper inside her net, staring back at her.

She raised an alarm summoning her family members. They managed to tuck the net into the mat to confine the snake inside as they did not want it to slip inside their home.

They made a call to Snake Helpline, a local animal welfare organisation, which despatched their volunteer Lalit Mohan Panda to the spot at 5 am. He rescued the snake and released it far away from the village in the presence of a forest official.

Subhendu Mallik, Secretary of Snake Hellpline said the woman was extremely lucky to survive.

“If it had bitten her she would have suffered life-threatening health complications and died in a few hours without treatment,” he said.

“I was bitten by a Russell’s Viper in 2007 and was in ICU for three days,” he added.
