During our stay at a rest camp in the Kruger National Park, we came across this beautiful ladybird seen in the video. This insect was identified as the lunate ladybird with its magnificent shiny colours on its back. It was busy cleaning its face by rubbing the front legs over the eyes and mouth. The lunate ladybird is a typical ladybird in that it normally has red markings on a black background on its back. It has yellow patches on its head and on rare occasions has yellow, instead of red, on its back as seen in the video. Ladybirds are generally considered useful insects and one of the greatest allies of the farmer and the gardener as many species feed on aphids or scale insects, which are pests in gardens, agricultural fields, orchards, and similar places. They are nature’s own ‘pest’ controllers and are more effective than poisonous chemicals. Their bright colour and pattern not only make them attractive visitors to the garden, but also help to protect them by warning potential predators of their distastefulness.
