Drone footage filmed this afternoon (June 27) shows the scale of the Saddleworth Moor fire in Greater Manchester.

The fire has now spread to the picturesque and panoramic area overlooking Dovestones Reservoir, called Indian's Head, the area seen in this drone footage.

A blaze started on Sunday evening on Saddleworth Moor and over the last 48 hours has more than doubled in size to an outstanding 7km in length.

This has now forced the evacuation of dozens of homes around the Carbrook area of Tameside.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, togethr with Derbyshire Fire Service, have now requested assistance from the Armed Forces to help tackle the blaze.

The fire has now spread to the picturesque and panoramic area overlooking Dovestones Reservoir, called Indian's Head. The area is famous for a plane crash on 19th August 1949 of a BEA Douglas DC-3 aircraft, which hit the ground in thick fog, while returning to Manchester Airport. 21 passengers and all the crew members died in the accident. Wreckage from the crash can still be seen here today.
