Elephant climbs tree to pick fruit in Indian village
This is the stunning moment an elephant climb a tree like a goat to pluck juicy jackfruits.
The video was shot by a wildlife activist Chandrasekara near Kerala-Tamil Nadu forest border in India in May 2017.
It shows the elephant standing on its hind legs with remarkable agility to reach out to the jackfruits hanging high up in the tree.
Elephants looking for jackfruits have become a menace to villagers in many parts of India. They smell the fruits’ aroma from a long distance and stampede towards them destroying anything that gets in the way.
Instead of celebrating a bumper crop of jackfruits, villagers in the Sundargarh district of Odisha are selling them away at throwaway prices.
Jagannath Pradhan from Kokerma village said: “I cannot keep ripe jackfruits as the smell will attract elephants to my house."
Many villagers are digging holes and burying jackfruits than risk drawing a rampaging herd of elephants.
