Large carpenter bee visits flowers in search of nectar

Buy video

The carpenter bee is a relatively large, robust bee and is rated amongst the largest bees in the world. The common name derives from their nesting behaviour, burrowing into hard plant material such as dead wood or bamboo. These insects visit flowers for pollen and nectar and in return, they will pollinate some flowers extremely efficiently. The video shows a female carpenter bee engrossed in buzz pollination. During this type of pollination, the bee grabs the tightly closed stamens in its front legs and buzzes by rapidly moving muscles in the body. This causes the pollen to literally be shaken loose. When the carpenter bee leaves the flower, the stamens flop open indicating to any other passing bees that the pollen has been taken. As the bee goes from flower to flower it transfers pollen off of its body onto a different flower. This ensures that the flower is not pollinated by its own pollen. Carpenter bees are extremely important pollinators in native plant communities, gardens, and crops. At the same time these very useful insects are also critically important for pollinating wild plants, which in return contributes a huge food source for birds and other wildlife.
