A tornado touched down on the edge of the Weston Pass fire near Fairplay, central Colorado, on July 5.

According to meteorologists, a tornado at high elevation and close to a wildfire is an extremely uncommon occurance.

No damage was reported and the tornado appeared to have little or no effect on the wildfire, though it did halt firefighting efforts. The blaze had grown to just under 13,000 acres as of the evening.

I am a Wildland firefighter in Colorado. Today while working on the Westin Pass fire near Fairplay, CO we were evacuated off the fire line because of an incoming storm. As we were being pelted by marble sized hail, we noticed some ash blowing around, the we saw the funnel cloud reaching down and realized a tornado was occurring over the fire! As I submit this I am still at the fire and cannot upload my higher quality 4k video from my camera yet for several days. This is taken from my phone.
