Changing the clothes of the dead: the unique summer ritual of Indonesia's Toraja culture

Indonesia's Toraja culture has a unique summer ritual: changing the clothes of the corpses of their ancestors.

The mummified remains of dead relatives are treated as if they are merely sick. Even after burial, corpses are exhumed and carefully cleaned, and their clothes changed. Sometimes, the dead are offered food, cigarettes, or gifts.

The ritual, known locally as Ma'nene, happens every one to three years after harvest. It is a process unique to the region, where bodies are treated with the full respect of a living family member.

Feasting and sharing stories about their loved ones also characterises Ma'nene.

The footage was filmed in Rindingalo, a remote village in Sulawesi Selatan, Indonesia, on July 7.
