Female rhino aggressively rejects male's attempt to approach her
While on safari in Kruger National Park we came across the special sight of three white rhinos walking down the road. The video shows how the female faces a male that has been following her and her calf. She does not look happy with his presence and threateningly pulls her ears back and snarls. The male rhino immediately freezes and attentively stares at the female. After a short while the male rhino dares to put another foot forward. The female immediately reacts aggressively by snarling while mock charging with one step forward. Again the male reacts by standing dead still. The female remained facing the frozen bull for a while before she turned around and carried on walking down the road. Of course the male starts following them again. At first it might look like the mother was protecting her calf but this fascinating behaviour seen in the video is part of the intriguing courtship process of the white rhinoceros. Once a cow has been identified as being on heat, the territorial bull starts a protracted courtship lasting from five to twenty days. The bull goes to great lengths to prevent her from leaving his turf. At the same time he obediently keeps the distance set by the female ranging from five to thirty meters. The cow may not be a willing captive and often the bull will be aggressively rejected as seen in the video. The male however shows great persistence over this period of time until the female eventually allows the male to mate with her. The male seen in this video clearly still have a lot of work to do
