meeting a mother bear and her three cubs
You always hear stories of how dangerous female bears and their cubs can be. I've met many in the forests of British Columbia, Canada and always found the opposite. On this day I had my camera and was able to safely capture the interaction. I returned to my vehicle one day on a remote logging road and saw a female with three cubs walking my way. They saw me and never spooked so I rested my camera on the wing mirror of the car and filmed them approach. They took their time slowly walking, eating grass and playing. they eventually rested about 5 meters from me and after some family time turned and walked away. It was calm, serene and beautiful. There was no need for me or the bears to be afraid. They were doing their thing and I was doing mine. The curious cubs stopped to watch me a few times and the mother kept her eye on me but she showed no signs of stress or aggression. I have a lot of experience with wild brown bears and have learned to read their behaviour, it is rare for bear to act aggressively and often of they do it is a reaction to something we have done to them. Think carefully about you believe to be true about bears, when you've had the pleasure of meeting one (or a family of them) you'll know how wonderful it is!
