12 injured at chemical factory blast near Cairo's main airport

An explosion at a petrochemicals factory outside Cairo International Airport on July 13 left 12 people injured, local media reported.

The explosion was reported at around 10:50 pm local time, with fire crews, ambulances and fire trucks dispatched to the scene shortly after. Residents said they heard the loud blast and could see the plumes of smoke from miles away.

The injured dozen were brought to the nearest airport for treatment.

A spokesperson of the Civil Aviation ministry said air traffic was not affected. The cause of the explosion is still being investigated.
