Glowing plankton illuminates waves on Devon beach

Two lucky holidaymakers witnessed the beauty of glowing plankton illuminating the waves whilst going for a night stroll on a beach in Devon.

The phenomenon, called bioluminescence, is the result of plankton being disturbed, causing them to emit light through a complex chemical reaction.

The filmer writes: ''We were taking a late night stroll in Devon when they spotted extraordinary flashes in the surf.

''We threw stones to check what was happening.

"When the ripples glowed fluorescent violet, we knew we were seeing something once-in-a-lifetime so we waded out into the flashing sea, as sparkling and glowing bright blue waves broke around us.

"We were overcome by the beauty and just behaved like children! It was the most bewitching, spectacular thing to witness."

The clip was captured on July 22.
