This is the moment a wildfire swept past olive trees in the resort town of Kineta, 30 miles west of Athens.

The video shows thick smoke enveloping the Gerania Mountains at Kineta and strong winds battering the olive trees.

The wildfire has left at least 50 people dead and hundreds injured.

The fire broke out on Sunday (July 23) and travelled fast, fanned by gale-force winds.

“The smoke was suffocating us, but we refused to leave our house without a fight," says filmer and journalist Ioanna Retsou.

"We took precautions, we had a clear vacation plan to the sea and we just waited to see what would happen with the wind force and the flames," she added. “Luckily we were not touched by the fire.”

The video was filmed yesterday (July 23) but only emerged online today.
