Road in England 'melts' amid scorching weather
This is the B2135, Steyning Road, between the junction with the A24 for approx 1 mile. It is especially degraded by the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation church, West Grinstead, where the top layer of tarmac has lifted away.
The weather is particularly hot today, and I am sure the usual excuse of "exceptional weather conditions" will be used, but it is not uncommon for temperatures to reach 30 degrees in July. I am concerned about how the roads will cope with truly exceptional circumstances.
This particular road was resurfaced last year and it is clear that sub-standard materials were used. That is, either the council specification was insufficient for typical UK weather conditions or the contractor used materials which were below specification.
Not only does this create a road surface that is dangerous for all road users, as a motorcyclist I am aware that soft tar has very poor grip and even when cooled and hardened, undressed tar is very slippery, especially when wet. Not all riders will be aware of this, nor aware of the degradation of this particular section of road. I sincerely hope that no one is badly injured, or worse, as a direct result of this negligence.
I expect that the cost of the remedial work will, ultimately, be met from Council Tax. So it has unnecessary cost implications too. This clearly needs better management.
