The African Wild Dog or African Painted Dog (Lycaon pictus) is sub-Saharan Africa’s most endangered large predator, surviving only in large reserves. Wild Dogs unusually live in open country and are specialised hunters, living in packs usually numbering 10-15 individuals although this pack was about 40. The packs have separate dominance hierarchies for males and females, and females usually leave their birth pack once they mature. African Wild Dogs are about the size of German Shepherds, and each animal has a unique pattern of tan, black and white markings on its fur. They are intensely social animals and hunt during the day, choosing a prey animal then running it down to the point of exhaustion. Young animals are allowed to feed first, and adults bring food back to the den and then regurgitate it for the pups. This pack of around 40 was on the privately-owned Limpopo-Lipadi Reserve in south-eastern Botswana. These adult African Wild Dogs rested after a successful hunt, their faces and forelegs stained by the blood of their prey.
