This is the moment a car, parked without its handbrake engaged, rolled backwards and caused a multi-vehicle pile-up that has left furious motorists demanding compensation.

CCTV footage captured on July 13 in Bukittinggi, Indonesia, shows the moment a white 4x4 triggered a chain reaction after rolling down the busy Ahmad Yani street in the West Sumatran city.

The accident was reportedly caused when a car crashed into a vehicle that was parked horizontally on the street, causing it to suddenly roll backwards and collide with a row of vehicles that were parked vertically.

The vertically-parked cars do not usually engage their handbrakes, but instead, place a small rock behind one of the wheels, locals say. This is done so that vehicles can be easily moved if another car wishes to park.

The driver of the vehicle that sparked the chain reaction reportedly fled the scene.

Photos and mobile phone footage show the damage caused by the incident, which trashed seven cars, left one motorcycle slightly damaged and also caused damage to a shop-front.

Furious motorists now demand that parking officials should offer up to 52m Rupiah (£2,750) in compensation.

But the Bukittinggi City Transportation Department says it is unable to offer money for the damages.

Seven cars were parked on Ahmad Yani street, Bukittinggi city, West Sumatra, Indonesia, and one motorbike crashed on Friday, July 13, 2018.

CCTV footage showed some cars parked on the uphill road suddenly backed up and crashing into each other's cars behind it. CCTV also shows a white CRV with the vehicle registration number BH 455 KA as the trigger for the accident.

In addition to causing seven cars damaged, one motorcycle was also slightly damaged. Uncontrolled cars retreated across to the other side of the road. There's a car that goes up to the pedestrian walkway and into the store.

Police who came to investigate this incident said, from the eyewitness testimony, this incident was triggered by a car that came out of the parking horizontal, when backward crashed into a white CRV car parking vertical. Vehicles parked vertically this no one uses parking brake. The parking attendant only propped up the tires with a small stone, on the pretext that the car could be pushed when another car came out of the parking lot.

As a result of this incident, the car owners demanded parking managers compensate as much as 52 million rupiah or about 2,750 pounds.

Until Monday 30 July, Bukittinggi City Transportation Department as the manager of the parking can not replace the losses experienced by car and motorcycle owners.
