A lioness stalks a herd of buffalo expecting a massive meal. However, one member of the herd, tired of being trailed, stops in its tracks, turns around, and fearlessly chases it down.

"Out of nowhere, two lionesses suddenly appeared and all their focus and attention was locked on this herd of buffalo," wrote the filmer. "The lionesses then used the tactic of running straight at the herd in broad daylight to create panic and pandemonium."

Their tactics are clearly ineffectual. The male buffalo decides he will not stand for it.

"The lioness turns around and starts running at the full speed with the buffalo behind her. The buffalo chased the lioness for over a hundred meters before they stopped," the filmer stated.

During a recent four day safari to the Lower Sabie area of the Kruger National Pak, we came across a big herd of buffalo looking really nervous. It was not long and the reason for their uneasy behaviour became clear. Out of nowhere, two lionesses suddenly appeared and all their focus and attention was locked on this herd of buffalo. The lionesses then used the tactic of running straight at the herd in broad daylight to create panic and pandemonium amongst the herd members. In the process they then hope for one individual to separate from the herd during the chaos. They would then target that separated individual and focus all their energy on it. This time round things did not go according to plan for the female lions. It is estimated that lions only have a hunting success rate of forty percent. This means that lions go through many failed attempts and this one was a classic example. While the lions created the chaos, one big and scary looking male buffalo decided that he will not stand for any of this. Unexpectedly the buffalo bull turns around and fearlessly charges straight towards the one lioness. The lioness turns around and starts running at the full speed with the buffalo behind her. The buffalo chased the lioness for over a hundred meters before they stopped. The second lioness then joined and the buffalo made it clear that he wants them to go away and gave them another two short warning charges. From there the two lionesses realized the dangers they were up against. They called off the hunt right there and moved away into the bush.
