Young elephants struggle to get up onto steep embankment

Buy video

The video shows the amusing attempts by three young male elephants to get up onto a steep embankment. While on safari in the Kruger National Park we saw a herd of elephants busy making their way through a dry river bed and up onto a steep embankment of a low water bridge. We made our way down to the low water bridge to observe the herd from closer. By the time we got there the whole herd managed to climb up the steep embankment besides three young males. To our surprise we realised that getting up onto the steep embankment was going to be a challenge for all three brothers, one after the other. Each young elephant had its own unique and very funny way of dealing with the challenge. The first elephant decides to go lie down during his attempt after which he then uses his knees to pull himself upright again onto the embankment. The second elephant clearly didn’t have much patience for his struggling brother and started his attempt. Quickly the young male finds himself in an awkward position, swaying back and forth before he eventually finds his balance and momentum to move forward. Then it was time for the third young elephant to see if he can make it up the steep hill. The young male elephant’s attempt starts off with a funny nose dive straight into the ground. With determination the young male finally manages to get onto his knees and then back onto his feet. With a triumphant shake of the head the young male went on to join the rest of the herd.
