Big male lions display dominance with their powerful roar
The roar of a big male lion is the most iconic sound in the African bush. To see these apex predators performing this unbelievably powerful roar is an absolute priceless experience. We were fortunate enough to come across these two beautiful beasts in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. It was a few minutes after sunrise when we found them. Suddenly one of the males starts roaring and quickly the second one followed. Sitting on the safari vehicle a few meters away we could feel the vibrations of the sound through the vehicle right into our stomachs. Lions roar to advertise their territory, letting all other lions know that they are present and dominant in a certain area. They mainly roar during the night or in the early hours of the morning while the air is stiller and sound carries further. The roar of a lion carries over seven kilometres. Lions are able to roar so loudly due to the suspensorium, which is a ‘voice box’ device at the top of the windpipe suspended with cartilage. The cartilage allows for movement of the voice box and as a result the vibrations are significantly enhanced and thus louder and they project further.
