Rescue crews were sent to the rain-swollen Lehigh River on August 13 after a raft renting company said that nearly 150 rafters were unaccounted for.

Severe flash flooding hit towns across central and northeastern Pennsylvania earlier in the day, closing down a busy interstate and flooding houses.

According to local media, an empty raft was found in Bowmanstown just after 6:30 pm. A Carbon County dispatcher said that 200 rafters had gone out but only 55 had returned. A report released later said emergency officials were "fairly confident" everyone who made the raft trip were safe, and that the rafters were on their way home to New York state in buses.

The rafters took the trip on a day that featured an unusual number of strong thunderstorms. The river current was heavy, adding to emergency workers’ concerns.
