Vet gets into dead elephant's stomach during post mortem
This is the moment a vet gets into the stomach of an elephant during a post mortem.
Veterinary doctor Mahesh Babu, who works in Kerala, India, wanted to collect internal body parts of the dead elephant and send them for lab analysis.
After attempts to scrape them off using instruments proved unsatisfactory, he did the unthinkable.
He lowered himself into the belly of the behemoth, which had been split open during a post mortem procedure, and carved out the organs he wanted with a knife.
A forest official who was present at the spot praised Babu. “He is very passionate about his job and committed to the welfare of animals,” he said.
The 35-year-old elephant had died of electrocution near Marayur in Idukki district on August 8.
The elephant had been considered a rogue as it had developed a habit of raiding crops and villages for food. Many farmers had illegally fenced their farms with electric wires to keep it away.
The elephant died trying to pull out a fence.
Local police have arrested a local farmer holding him responsible for the elephant's death.
