I had always wanted to see a whale in its natural environment. When I was planning a road trip around Iceland, I found out that there was a strong possibility to to encounter the humpback whales in the north coast of the island. I booked a RHIB (rigid-hulled inflatable boat) tour so that we could quickly approach to a whale when we see one. It was a surprise for my fiancee, she had no idea about the tour before we came to the starting point - Dalvik town. It was planned on 23rd of June, 2018 at 6pm. That day in the morning, I got a call from the tour company. They asked us to come as soon as possible because the weather was getting worse with every hour. It was not so easy, because we had a few hundred kilometers to Dalvik, but we managed to get there early enough for our trip not to be canceled. It was quite windy and rainy, but we were very excited. We put on warm clothes and started by a very fast ride to the place where the whales could appear. About 30 minutes later, we saw a tail over the surface. It was a humpback! After a while he gave us an amazing show by jumping over the water. It was amazing to see such a huge creature moving so gently. We were really lucky - the employees from the tour company told us that it's quite rare to see the jumps, so even they were impressed. Moreover, we were the only tourists on the boat, so we felt like it was a private trip. I guess the weather discouraged other people. It was a great experience and we will definitely do it again if we have a chance.
