A grumpy elephant chased antelopes away from a watering hole in Kruger National Park, South Africa, on August 16.

“A small herd of very thirsty antelopes named kudu joined a herd of elephants around this watering hole,” the filmer said. “It was clear that one male elephant did not seem happy.”

“He decided to show off his size with intimidating behavior,” the filmer continued. “The elephant approached the antelope with his head shaking and ears spread out. The cheeky elephant wanted to show who is boss of this watering hole.”

“At first, the kudu antelope looked confused by the audacity of the elephant wanting to deny them a drink of water,” the filmer said. “A few kudu were so thirsty that they fearlessly continued drinking, ignoring the oncoming threat.”

“With the elephant’s persistent intimidating behavior, the kudu eventually realized that it was better to move away,” the filmer said.

During the dry season in the African bush, wild animals are forced to quench their thirst at only a small selection of watering holes pumped through the year. These specific watering points attract an array of wildlife gathering around the water. It was in the Kruger Park that we stopped at one of these watering holes to observe the wildlife gathering around the water for a drink. Suddenly a small herd of very thirsty antelope named kudu joined a herd of elephants around this watering hole. It was clear that one particular male elephant did not seem happy with the big antelope at the water. He decided to show off his size with intimidating behaviour. The elephant approached the antelope with his head shaking and ears spread out. Adding his loud rumbling and trumpeting noises, the cheeky elephant wanted to show who is boss of this watering hole. At first the kudu antelope looked confused by the audacity of the elephant wanting to deny them a drink of water. A few kudu was so thirsty that they fearlessly continued drinking, ignoring the oncoming threat. With the elephant’s persistent intimidating behaviour, the kudu eventually realized that it was better to move away. In the end the kudu moved away into the bush and the elephant went back to enjoy a drink of water. This cocky behaviour by one elephant was really funny and fascinating experience at the same time. After this event we could only wonder whether this elephant was just selfish at the time or if he was filled with the cheekiness of knowing that he is the largest land mammal on the planet and basically untouchable.
