A British community leader's video explaining what young people should do in the event of someone pulling a knife has gone viral.

In the clip, which was filmed on Monday, Londoner Garvin Snell, 37, demonstrates with his son his technique for dealing with a knife attacker.

Snell picks up a knife and his son immediately sprints away and jumps over a garden fence.

"There's no shame in running away," says Snell.

"If someone pulls a knife on you, get the hell out of there," he adds.

"I really hope this video can save lives because too many young people are being killed for no reason," Snell wrote online.

My name is Garvin Snell, I’m 37 and from West London. As a parent I’m very concerned about the high volume of knife crime happening around London and the uk and I did this video to teach my son what to do if someone pulled a knife on him. I do a lot of work within my community and I was running as a local councillor in the May 2018 local elections. I wasn’t successful this time round but I’ll be standing again in the next 4 years. I really hope this video can save lives because to many young people are being killed for no reason. I would love to be able to go into schools and talk to young people about this issue.
