Devotees at the Aluva Mahadeva temple in Ernakulam district, Kerala, opted to visit their holy shrine that was nearly submerged in water.

Footage shows devotees worshipping in flood water up to their chest.

Many even take the ritual dip right inside the temple.

Arun Nair, a frequent visitor, said: “The Aluva Mahadeva temple, located on the banks of Periyar, gets submerged whenever the river overflows.”

“As Hindus worship their ancestors this month, many visited the temple to make ritual offerings despite water,” he added.

But the flood water rose further last week completely submerging the temple as the gates of the nearby dams were opened.

The South Indian state of Kerala is reeling under one of its worst floods in history triggered by heavy monsoons. Nearly 360 have died and 350,000 displaced by overflowing water and landslides.
