A newborn baby giraffe struggled to get onto its long wobbly legs in Kruger National Park in South Africa on August 21.

“The video shows that this giraffe’s first steps only came after a serious of falls and failed attempts,” the filmer said. “It was initially very weak and every attempt ended with the baby giraffe falling forward, backwards and sideways.”

“Eventually, the newborn giraffe gathered all its strength and with great determination managed to stand up using its long legs,” the filmer added.

It was in the Kruger National Park that we came across this most adorable sighting of a baby giraffe just after it was born. We missed the actual birth by minutes and decided to watch what will happen next. The newborn calf was still sitting on the ground, already with its neck up. At this stage the baby giraffe was at its most vulnerable. The newborn young of prey animals are the target of lurking predators in the African bush and are able to take their first steps within fifteen minutes from birth. It was a real challenge for this youngster to keep its balance, swaying back and forth, looking like someone leaving the pub after a big night out. It was really funny to watch how this little giraffe was stumbling all over the place. At the same time it was inspiring and fascinating to witness the struggle and determination of a wild animal born into such a hostile environment.
