An Italian trail runner has set a new record for the Tyrolean High Altitude Trail.

Daniel Jung ran the trail in a time of 57 hours and 32 minutes, covering a distance of 200 kilometres.

The trail – which sits as high as 2.706 meters above sea level – runs from the Mayrhofen/Zillertal Valley in Austria to Merano, Italy.

The trail would take the average hiker between 10 and 12 days, it is believed.

Footage filmed over the course of the trek shows off the beautiful alpine landscapes Daniel encountered.

Upon completing the trail on August 9, Daniel said: "I underestimated the terrain, the fatigue was extremely bad and pushed me to the
max."

The South Tiroler added that it was "certainly the biggest challenge in my sporting career so far".
