The Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) is the only swan native to Australia and is mostly found in the southeast and southwest of the continent. Black Swans are monogamous and usually breed in permanent, well-vegetated wetlands. A Black Swan family and their four newly-hatched cygnets were on Herdsman Lake in metropolitan Perth. Both parents show a high degree of care for their young, protecting them from predators by charging at the threat and lunging with their bill as well as attacking with open wings. These cygnets were quietly feeding on waterweeds with their mother who was pulling up clumps of waterweed to make it easier for her babies to reach.
