How cute! A Splendid Fairy-wren family feeding on the ground

Buy video

The male Splendid Fairy-wren (Malurus splendens) is a living jewel of a bird when in his full violet-blue and black breeding plumage. This breeding male was hopping about feeding on small invertebrates in the Serpentine Dam Picnic Area near Perth in Western Australia. Fairy-wrens live in groups of two to eight, and remain in their territory all year-round. The dominant pair is socially monogamous but sexually promiscuous, and when nesting is assisted by one or more male or female helpers. In this clip the breeding male is accompanied by another male in eclipse plumage (with bluish wings) and a female (with grey-brown wings).
