Mother elephant lends her clumsy calf a helping trunk to stand up

It was a hot afternoon in the Kruger National Park and we were watching a herd of elephants cooling down next to the river. Many elephants were enjoying a drink while some of the young elephants used this time to play around in the mud and cool off at the same time. Two specific young elephants grabbed our attention and I started filming. Both these young elephants looked like they were having the time of their lives. Once playtime was over, the real challenge of having to get back onto their feet in the slippery mud became the highlight of this entire sighting. The bigger one of the two young elephants eventually managed to get back onto its feet. The smaller elephant looked a little clumsier and had a tough time trying to get back up from the mud. Suddenly a large trunk appeared into the picture and there the mother was, lending her struggling little calf a helping trunk. At first it seemed helpless but the mother elephant persisted and kept her trunk straightened out as a support for her baby. Finally the baby elephant leant against the mother’s supporting trunk which then helped the calf to find its balance and from there onto its feet again. To witness the love, support and care elephants show for each other is always a rewarding and inspiring experience. Elephants are most likely the most intelligent wild animals walking this planet and never lack to show compassion for their family members.
