This was the scene in Cagayan Valley in the Cagayan province of north east Philippines yesterday (Friday) morning as Typhoon Ompong approached.

The super typhoon, also named Typhoon Mangkhut, caused palm trees to blow as strong winds and rain hit the region.

The storm was due to make landfall early on Saturday morning. It is said to be more powerful than Hurricane Florence in the U.S.

Typhoon Ompong has sustained winds of 270 kilometers per hour (165 mph) and gusts as high as 325 kilometers per hour (200 mph), the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane, according to meteorologists.
