Jet Airways passengers suffer nose, ear bleeds on Indian flight
Passengers on board of a Jet Airways Boeing 737 aircraft bled from ear and nose after the crew forgot to flick a switch regulating cabin air pressure.
The aircraft, flying from Mumbai to Jaipur in India, had 166 people on board, out of which 30 suffered nosebleeds. A few had bleeding from the ear and many complained of headaches.
Eight people have been hospitalized. All the affected passengers were attended by doctors at the airport.
The Flight 9W 697 returned to Mumbai after the incident.
A passenger, Darshak Hathi, shared a video showing traumatised passengers breathing with the help of oxygen masks.
“Panic situation due to technical fault in Jet Airways 9W 0697. Flight returned back to Mumbai after 45 minutes. All passengers are safe including me,” tweeted Hathi.
Lalit Gupta, a senior official of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said: "During climb, the crew forgot to select bleed switch due to which cabin pressurisation could not be maintained. As a result, oxygen masks got deployed.”
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has ordered an investigation into the incident.
A Jet Airways spokesperson said both the pilots have been taken off scheduled duties pending investigation.
"The airline is making alternative flight arrangements for guests on this flight," he added.
