South Carolina river nears cresting, residents prepare for evacuation
The overflowing Pee Dee River, which runs through the Carolinas and has been severely flooded since Hurricane Florence dumped torrential rain on the region last week, prompted authorities to warn of evacuations on September 20.
According to local media, the river was at 30 feet, 8 inches of the evening, and is estimated to reach its crest of 31 feet Friday noon.
Approximately 500 families have been warned to evacuate, and county officials expect to issue such orders over the weekend.
Elsewhere in South Carolina, the Waccamaw and Lynches Rivers are also forecast to crest this weekend and into early next week. State Fire marshal reported that search-and-rescue teams had already assisted with 518 evacuations due to flooding over the last 24 hours.
