Disabled man tests out wheelchair ramp and falls backwards
A disabled man's proud moment testing out a newly built pavement ramp didn't go to plan - he toppled backwards and whacked his head on a car.
Vladik Fokin, 27, had unsuccessful spinal surgery eight years ago and was left wheelchair-bound since then. He had campaigned for a modification to the pavement to help him reach his apartment in north-western Russia's city of Pskov.
Authorities recently agreed and smashed away the curb to build him a small concrete ramp.. Beaming Vladik then tested the ramp for the first time while his older brother recorded the moment on July 5.
Footage shows Mr Fokin saying before testing the ramp: "They made an accessible environment for me finally. Are you happy for me, brother?"
His brother's voice can be heard replying in the background: "Yeah!" Mr Fokin continues: "It looks awesome."
After that he moves onto the ramp and crashes backwards. He hits his head on the car bumper while his brother rushes to help as the alarm blares.
Mr Fokin injured his head and arm in the fall - but laughed off the fall and said he would need more practice to power his way up the mini ramp.
He said: "I got a bump on the head after hitting it against the car bumper and scratched my arm."
Mr Fokin says that he lives independently and is able to travel alone to neighbouring cities. The only thing he is not able to do so far is to go out of his apartment block on his own.
