Tourists find incredible sight of five rhino in the wild on World Rhino Day
World Rhino Day was celebrated across the world by nature lovers and others alike. It was no exception in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. We as safari guides wanted to put a huge focus on the species for the day. Sharing our knowledge and other info on the rhino species, making people aware on how precious and threatened they are at the same time. The best way to do this was to go out in the bush hoping to start the day with a rhino sighting. After a short lecture on the species we headed out that morning. We agreed to initially ignore all other animals and only focus on tracking and hopefully finding any rhino for our tourist guests on World Rhino Day. Vehicles headed off in different direction all with the same goal in mind. It was not long before the first sightings came in. Eventually we came across our own brilliant sighting of not one but five white rhinos. It was an incredible find for us on this very important day. Two of the rhinos even curiously came a little closer to the safari vehicle, wondering what everything was all about. Since 2013 South Africa has lost over a thousand rhinos a year to poaching up to 2017. In 2018 we are standing on roughly three hundred and fifty dead rhino. This already shows a twenty percent decline compared to last year due to the intense, hard and very dangerous work done by our filed rangers fighting this real war against rhino poaching in the bush of South Africa. Protecting our rhino costs millions of dollars yearly. Reserves and parks rely on private funding and public donations in the hope to win this war eventually.
