Indian police slap and humiliate Hindu woman for befriending Muslim man
In a disturbing hate crime, Indian police have been caught abusing and slapping a female Hindu medical student for being friends with a Muslim man.
On September 23, a pro-Hindu extremist group barged into a house in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh in north India, that was rented by the Muslim man, also a medical student, and dragged both him and the woman outside.
The group said it did not approve of the relationship between the two, and beat both of them before handing them over to the police.
Hindu extremist groups allege Muslim men practice ‘love jihad’, where they entice Hindu women to convert them to Islam.
Police then took over after the vigilantes had left and continued to abuse the woman.
A video shot by the police themselves shows the woman sitting in a police jeep along with four constables.
One of the constable sitting in the front uses foul and sexually abusive language towards her.
“Toh mulla zyada pasand aa raha (So you like Muslims more)?,” He asks the woman in Hindi.
Then a woman constable sitting in the back, starts hitting the student on her back and head. The other male constable further shames her with a sexual slur while the woman constable forcibly removes the scarf from her face, revealing her identity.
After the video leaked, senior officials suspended the four constables.
The district police head Ranvijay Singh said: “A probe has been ordered and those who found guilty will be punished.”
