A heartwarming video has emerged of a cow and its newborn calf being rescued from a lake in County Meath, Ireland after spending two months marooned on an island.

The video, captured on Saturday, shows a rescue team bringing the two animals back to shore after the adult disappeared in late July.

According to local reports, the owner's neighbour spotted the missing cow stranded on a tiny island in the Breakey Lough.

A local man then took a boat to deliver food to the animal, and was amazed to discover that it had given birth while on the island.

A week later, a rescue organisation managed to successfully bring the cow and its calf back onto safe ground.

“I was utterly perplexed as to where she had got to, I had feared the worst," the cow's owner told a local news organisation.

“She was gone so long I had to give up on her. I am delighted and very surprised to have her back and to have the puzzle solved," he added.
