Crowds at the Global Citizen Festival were sent fleeing in panic amid fears that shots were fired on Sunday, September 30.

The chaos occurred when concertgoers heard a loud bang echo through Central Park. Assuming the bang was gunshot, the sound started a stampede as people fled for the exits and shouted "gun, gun, gun".

It was later found that the bang was caused by a crowd barrier falling at the general admissions section of the concert.

Global Citizen confirmed that that a number were injured in the panic, but that the show carried on as normal.

People begin running for what many described as “their lives” when a loud bang echoed through Central Park, followed by a number of loud screams. It was an eerie sound, followed by brief silence and confusion. After 5 or so seconds, people began running, assuming the bang was a gunshot and the screams was the aftermath. This started a stampede as people fled for the exits, escaping Central Park. It turns out the bang was a crowd barrier falling at the front of the concert in the general admission section, but nobody knew that, and concert officials didn’t announce that for at least 10 minutes. People were shouting “Gun, Gun, Gun” and security/NYPD was telling people to get out. Around 70% of the concert goers exited the park, and were not allowed re-entry.
