A resident in West Palau filmed the destruction caused by the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit the coast of Sulawesi on September 28.

Footage filmed the morning after the tremor shows the remains of dozens of houses in the village of Balaroa.

The official death toll from Friday's disaster was today increased from 844 to 1,234.

Recovery efforts and mass burials are underway as the island grieves for the lives lost in the deadly disaster.

7.4 M earthquake on Friday (28/9) caused thousands of homes in an area of 2.38 square kilometers in Balaroa village, West Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, as if 'missing'.

1,477 houses that were standing on top of it disappeared from landslides, hundreds of people who failed to save themselves were also suspected of being buried inside.

Head of the Data Information and Public Relations Center of National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, told the media that the fluctuating Balaroa land had 5 meters fall down and 2 meters up.

According to Sutopo, until Tuesday (2/10) or 4 days after the earthquake, there was no evacuation process in this area because of the difficult access by heavy equipment. The SAR team also has not been able to ascertain the whereabouts of the victim who was flat with the land in Balaroa.

"Balaroa Village is located on the Palu-Koro fault line which is one of the areas that suffered the most damage," Sutopo said.

Sofyan, 35, a local resident who survived the disaster said, "during the earthquake, Balaroa National Housing Complex was completely swallowed up by land that experienced ups and downs."
