Bizarre anuran: a calling Mesoamerican Burrowing Toad (Rhinophrynus dorsalis)

Buy video

The Mesoamerican Burrowing Toad (Rhinophrynus dorsalis) is a unique anuran; it is the only extant species in the family Rhinophrynidae. Burrowing Frogs live most of the time underground, and appear on the surface only during the breeding season after the first heavy rains. Then they are very obvious because of their far-carrying calls, shown in the video. The cacophony around this individual is dominated by a multitude of Baudin's Treefrogs (Smilisca baudinii). Video by Knut Eisermann.
