A volcano on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi erupted on the morning of Wednesday, October 2.

The eruption comes just days after the 7.5-magnitude earthquake and tsunami struck Palu, killing more than 1,300 in one of the country's deadliest natural disasters.

This video, filmed at 12:05 am on Thursday, shows the glow of the lava against the night sky. The molten liquid slid 2,500 metres from the crater at the top of Mount Soputan, located in North Sulawesi.

The Center of National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) announced that the eruption status had been elevated to Level 3.

Volcanic activity has increased in recent weeks leading up to the eruption, media reported, and locals have been advised to stay away from the vicinity to avoid contact with ash and potential lava flows.

It is not known if the earthquake and volcanic eruption were related.
