A rescue attempt descended into chaos after an injured leopard attacked a villager.

People from a village in Bageshwar, Uttarkhand, spotted an injured leopard lying on the bank of a local river on October 3.

They informed the local forest staff, who arrived and requested the help of villagers to rescue the injured leopard.

A group of men tried to tie up the leopard using ropes.

As a few men tried to restrain the leopard using thick sticks.

Villager Jagdish Singh, 50, tried to tie it up.

But the leopard managed to free itself and grabbed his hand. Singh lost his balance, fell down close to the leopard and the agitated animal attacked him ferociously.

Other villagers managed to pull away Singh and shifted him to a hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

“I went to help the men rescue leopard. But it bit my hands and legs,” said Singh.

One villager said the rescue attempt was amateurish. “The officials should have tranquilised the animal instead of asking us to tie it up,” he said.

After the attack, the officials managed to tie up the leopard and take it away.
