Fluffy Coot chicks on their nest, one being fed

Buy video

Eurasian Coots (Fulica atra) are common waterbirds in Europe, Asia and Australia. Coots have lobed rather than webbed feet and thrive in wetlands with submerged or floating waterweeds. It is Springtime in Australia, and this pair of Coots has successfully hatched five chicks in their floating nest made of reeds. In Australia, Eurasian Coots feed mainly on vegetable matter, diving to gather filaments of green algae or grazing on grass on land. They also take some animal prey including insets, small fish and worms. Both Coot parents feed their chicks and the chicks compete with each other to be the first to obtain food offered by one of their parents. One of the chicks perched on the edge of the nest so it could be fed some green algae by one of its parents before any of its siblings.
