For 17 days in the summer of 2018 a member of the Southern Resident Orca population on the south coast of British Columbia and northwest Washington State carried the body of her deceased calf. The images of Orca J35 prompted the Canadian Orca Rescue Society to hold a 17 day vigil to raise awareness of the plight of the endangered Southern Resident Orcas and call on governments to take greater action to ensure an adequate supply of food and improvements to the whales' environment. Using full size inflatable replicas of Orcas they collect signatures on a petition on the street outside the British Columbia Legislature in the Inner Harbour area of Victoria to urge the Canadian government to increase funding for Salmon hatcheries and spawning stream rehabilitation, close Orca foraging areas to fishing and whale watching, prevent an increase in ships carrying toxic materials and remove open net fish farms on Canada's West Coast. The video was taken as the Canadian Orca Rescue Society members continued the vigil on October 8th, 2018, Canada's Thanksgiving Holiday.
